MATCHA WHISK
Dark Bamboo Shin Chasen
About This Whisk
This matcha whisk is made from kurotake, or dark bamboo, a material valued in tea tools for its natural strength and deep brown tone. The darker color develops as the bamboo matures, giving each whisk a more grounded, traditional appearance compared to lighter bamboo.
Dark bamboo is commonly chosen for its durability and visual character. Natural variations in tone and grain are expected, and each whisk will differ slightly in color and finish.
Shin Chasen Form
This whisk follows the shin (真) chasen shape, one of the most widely used forms in Japanese tea practice. With approximately 64 tines, it sits between fine-tined usucha whisks and thicker koicha whisks, allowing it to perform both roles.
The balanced tine count makes this whisk suitable for:
-
Usucha (thin tea) — creating a light, even foam
-
Koicha (thick tea) — kneading and mixing dense matcha
Its versatility makes it a practical choice for daily preparation as well as more formal tea practice.
Craft & Material
Each whisk is carved and shaved from a single piece of bamboo. Because bamboo is a natural material and the process is manual, slight differences in tine thickness, spacing, curvature, and overall form are normal.
These variations do not affect function and are part of the character of tea tools.
